Italian CEOs face the Wikipedia test

In the age of artificial intelligence, Wikipedia is one of the places where the digital reputation of business leaders is built and tested. The new Lundquist .wikipedia CEO research, featured in L’Economia by Corriere della Sera, analyses the Wikipedia presence of 208 Italian CEOs and explains why companies and senior executives can no longer afford to ignore it.

Only 38 of 208 CEOs currently have a dedicated article on Italian Wikipedia. A further 16 profiles were published at least once and later deleted. The figures show that obtaining a page is difficult, while keeping it solid, neutral and well sourced may be even harder.

Wikipedia is among the most consulted sources online, often ranks near the top of search-engine results and is used as a source by automated and generative systems. What an article includes, omits or flags can influence how a CEO is interpreted online. The issue is not only visibility, but above all credibility and reputation.

WHAT WE ANALYSED AND HOW

The Lundquist .wikipedia CEO research, featured in L’Economia by Corriere della Sera, analysed 208 CEOs from 200 organisations relevant to Italy’s economic, industrial and reputational landscape. The analysis focused on the Italian-language articles dedicated to these leaders and assessed four aspects: article structure, quality and independence of sources, activity of the editorial community, and the presence of warnings or other signs of concern.

The objective was not simply to establish whether an article exists, but whether it is complete, well sourcedneutral and up to date. A page that receives little editorial attention can leave outdated information, weak sections or unresolved warnings visible for years, potentially damaging reputation.

A SELECTIVE SPACE FOR BUSINESS LEADERS

Being the CEO of a well-known company does not automatically justify a Wikipedia article. Notability must be demonstrated through authoritative, independent sources and must extend beyond the executive’s corporate role.

In fact, the highest-scoring articles are those about Urbano Cairo and John Elkann. Both have public profiles spanning not only business but also media, sport, finance, philanthropy and governance.

For many other business leaders, the picture is more complex. A strong professional career may not translate into an encyclopaedic article if the profile’s public notability is not clearly documented outside the company’s own narrative.

A Wikipedia article is not a corporate profile, a CV or a personal branding tool. It must follow the encyclopedia’s criteria: neutrality, verifiability, due weight and independent sourcing. Above all, it must respect the rules of the Wikipedia community.

This is a fundamental principle: when it is ignored, the reputational consequences can be clear.

WHAT THE NUMBERS SAY

Among the deleted profiles, 12 out of 16 cite “CV” or “résumé-style” content among the reasons for deletion. This shows how easily an article can become too close to corporate language, focusing on roles and achievements without the distance Wikipedia requires.

The risk is reputational. Warnings, discussions, conflicts of interest and deletions remain public and traceable. A weak or poorly managed article, or forced content, can therefore become a reputational boomerang: instead of strengthening visibility, it exposes vulnerability. The risk increases when companies look for shortcuts, force a presence at any cost or rely on supposed experts promising quick results, because on Wikipedia method matters more than speed.

WHY COMMUNITY MATTERS

A Wikipedia article does not exist only in the text visible to users, but also in the work, discussions and decisions of the community around it. For CEOs, this is especially important because business leaders often attract less spontaneous attention from volunteer editors than figures from sport, music or cinema.

The research confirms this: 30 of the 38 existing CEO articles have an empty discussion page or have recorded no significant activity in the past two years. Only 7 articles show a solid and active community able to monitor and keep the content up to date. A low-activity article is not necessarily problematic, but it is more vulnerable if information becomes outdated, warnings remain unresolved and weak sections stay visible for years. Where the community is less active, monitoring becomes even more important.

METHOD, NOT SHORTCUTS

For companies, Wikipedia cannot be treated like a conventional communication channel. Before creating, editing or even simply monitoring an article, it is necessary to assess the context: the quality of the available sources, the profile’s encyclopaedic notability, the page’s history, potential risks and the correct way to engage with the community.

This is where the .wikipedia CEO research comes in. By analysing presence, absence and deletions, it helps companies and leaders understand why Wikipedia now affects the reputation of corporate leadership and businesses. For 18 years, the Lundquist .wikipedia Observatory and team have supported companies, institutions and individuals in reading the encyclopedia for what it is: an open, independent space that cannot be controlled, but can be understood, monitored and approached transparently.
