Ep. 28 – What the Greenpeace verdict in North Dakota really means while European ESG funds cling to fossil fuel holdings

LISTEN TO THE EPISODE 28 OF OUR PODCAST

ABSTRACT

As virtually the only banker to travel to the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation at the height of the protests against the Dakota Access pipeline in late 2016, this week’s events from the U.S. town of Mandan have been particularly bitter for Sasja. In this episode, our co-host reflects on Greenpeace’s court loss against Texas-based pipeline operator Energy Transfer, which brought a lawsuit against the NGO for defamation, conspiracy and physical damage to its infrastructure. As we reflect on the practical ramifications for investors, it emerges that thousands of so-called ESG funds in Europe are invested in companies operating in the oil, gas and coal industries. Our survey of the state of sustainability and ESG also touches on the Science Based Target initiative taking a stand and BYD bringing disruption to the electric vehicle charging sector.
