A sustainability framework to boost success on and off the pitch
#Internal engagement & training
Djurgårdens IF, the Stockholm football club also known as DIF, needed to demonstrate internally and externally that its sustainability commitment was more than a series of separate projects but a key asset in meeting the club’s critical challenges, from ensuring organisational resilience and supporting financial sustainability to reinforcing ties to the city community. By addressing these challenges, the ultimate objective was to make DIF more successful on and off the pitch.
We worked with the club to put together a process for building a strategic framework showing the key value of sustainability focus areas for DIF’s success as a club (both football and hockey) and a business, work that led to the creation of its first sustainability report. This process included:
– Internal engagement with the DIF CEO and management as well as training for key functions about the club’s sustainability approach
– Support in engaging a range of external stakeholders – from supporter groups and the media to sponsors and sports organisations – and the development of a materiality analysis prioritising the club’s sustainability issues
– Development of the club’s sustainability model, showing the interaction between the club’s organisation, its large community sports effort and professional teams through to the match day experience
– Editorial support, graphic design and translation of the club’s sustainability report.
The DIF report was published in 2019, focusing mainly on presenting a structured approach to sustainability as a core value for the club and for society.
The sustainability framework has guided the club in developing supporting activities, to measure performance as well as to better communicate its efforts .
The club’s experience was presented as a case study during a UEFA event on sustainability in European football.
